Auguste Rodin was born in 1840 in Paris, the son of a policeman, now considered one of the greatest sculptors of all time. Rodin had a turbulent early period. However, he endured the boredom of several art schools and the poverty of a young artist in a nation engaged in war. But, when France recovered from the Franco-Prissian War, Rodin was prepared with models for sculpture that would re-adorn France. Rodin's work is characterised by a soaring romanticism captured in a semi-impressionistic and semi-realistic image.
